September 30, 2021 - October 10, 2021
This course is designed to bridge the gap between the crime of arson and a guilty verdict. During this course, you will be split into small work groups led by a trained fire investigator, to observe students working in burn cells as they use the scientific method to determine fire origin and cause.
During a working lunch, discussion of what was observed at each burn cell will be followed by videos of the fires being set by fire academy staff. This will aid in creating a more thorough understanding of the changes that occur during a fire along with giving a clearer picture of the smoke and fire damage seen that morning. A question and answer session will follow.
The day will conclude with a presentation from Rockingham County Attorney Chris O’Brien, who can give a more complete picture of what arson cases entail along with tips and tricks to successful prosecution.
If time permits, a demonstration by one of our ignitable liquid canine teams will be offered to those who are interested.
Please wear clothing appropriate for a fire scene visit i.e. long sleeve shirt and pants, closed toe shoes or boots.
