Swiftwater Rescue Level I

Course Description

Swiftwater Rescue Level I provides rescue personnel with the fundamentals needed to stay safe while working in or around swiftwater/flood environments. This 28-hour course is delivered in three blocks. Blocks are either 3 day or two nights and two days. Block one includes interactive lectures and dry land operations. Block two and three are spent on the river. Students gain knowledge in hydrology and river classifications, size-up, site control and scene management. Practical skills include self-rescue, swiftwater swimming and fundamentals of shore, boat and in-water rescues. Additionally, students are introduced to the basics of paddle boat handling and the fundamentals of rope rescue including mechanical advantage and anchor systems.

This course has been independently evaluated to meet the requirements of the NFPA 1006 Chapter 12 Swiftwater Rescue Level I.

  • Thermal protection (wet suit or dry suit highly suggested)
