I got the impression that the author might have changed the ending so that it wouldn't be so predictable? It actually hides a very different and more complicated plot that's gonna amaze you :D. This is not a racy thriller with twists and turns at the end of each chapter but more a purposeful march towards the one big unknown fracture that is alluded to throughout the book. In the end, there are still some unresolved issues and I look forward to the sequel to see what happens next to Sawyer and her new friends.
