The Town of Hampstead is establishing an eligibility list for 4 anticipated positions of full time Firefighter/EMT’s. This is a 42 hour per week rotating schedule with one (24) twenty-four hour shift on and three (3) days off (schedule is approved by the fire chief).
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School graduate or equivalent;
- 18 Years of age;
- Firefighter II (within 1 year of hire, based on acceptance into FS&T class. Current FF II certification preferred)
- Licensed NH EMS provider as EMT (Advanced EMT preferred)
- Successfully have passed the CPAT Exam prior to hire (per NH Administrative Rules/Fire 700); Or Lateral transfer of full-time career personnel pursuant to State of NH Administrative Rule Part FIRE 703 Transfers;
- CDL-B driver’s license with tank and air brake endorsements is preferred;
- Pass NFPA 1582 medical evaluation or applicable medical evaluation.
- Lateral transfers are encouraged – starting pay is based on experience
Effective March 1, 2025, the department will begin its own ambulance transporting service for Hampstead and Sandown. It is projected that there will be 735 transports per year. Additionally, the town has received a SAFER grant to increase its staffing to meet NFPA standards. The department will now have the necessary staffing to provide adequate Fire, Rescue, and EMS services.
The Hampstead Select Board is very supportive of the town employees and recently updated the fire department’s pay scale to be very competitive. The town’s benefits are also very competitive – see below.
Salary Range: $55,551-$73,391 (includes holiday pay) Starting salary depends on experience and qualifications.

Currently, the schedule averages 42 hours per week, which is a rotation of 24 hours on duty and 72 hours off duty.
The department recently expanded its facility and renovated all areas of the existing building. It included a gear storage area to separate contaminants from the living and office areas. Feel free to come by and take a look.
The average age of department vehicles is less than 10 years. Working with the town officials, the Select Board and CIP Committee, there are comprehensive vehicle and equipment replacement plans that are in place and supported.
Beginning January 1, 2025, there will be 4 or 5 personnel on duty 24/7. The department has a quality, dedicated core group of Firefighters that are always supported by the department’s administration, town officials, and more importantly, the community.
Staffing is extremely important and necessary to support Fire, Rescue, and EMS Operations. Overtime is available in order to maintain consistent staffing.
