This course provides firefighters with a foundational understanding of combustion theory and fire behavior within a structure. A thorough grasp of how fire develops, spreads, and reacts to environmental factors which allows firefighters to make informed strategic and tactical decisions, leading to more effective use of water, apparatus, and other resources, ultimately enhancing life safety and property conservation.
Training Environment
Students will be participating in a live fire training evolution inside the Fire Behavior Simulator (Flashover Can). During this evolution, students will:
  • Identify and explain the four stages of fire growth.
  • Describe common fire behavior characteristics and indicators of flashover.
  • Recognize key attributes of smoke and products of combustion.
  • Understand the methods of heat transfer and their impact on fire development.
Safety and Compliance

All participants must adhere to the following personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements:
  • Full structural firefighting ensemble (helmet, coat, pants, hood, gloves, and boots) certified to NFPA 1970 and within the 10-year service life limit.
  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) that is inspected, serviceable, and compliant with current standards.
  • All personnel entering a live-fire area must be fully encapsulated with respiratory protection in place.
Gear Inspection and Rentals
  • PPE and SCBA will be inspected by Division staff on the day of the evolution to ensure NFPA compliance.
  • Departments unable to provide compliant PPE may request rental gear in advance through the New Hampshire Fire Academy.
  • All students, regardless of whether they bring their own gear or are using rentals, will be issued an Academy helmet for use during the evolution.
