Course Description

At the conclusion of this course fire department personnel will be able to operate apparatus equipped with pumping devices by performing preventive maintenance checks and services, communicate using mobile communications equipment and technology, drive pumping apparatus on roadways, and operate fire department pumps during emergency incidents to ensure public safety, crew safety, and successful fireground operations while avoiding damage to the emergency vehicle entrusted to them.

The Driver/Operator-Pumping Apparatus class is designed to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills required to safely operate fire service pumping apparatus. A combination of classroom instruction and hands-on skill drills cover basic pump terminology, design and construction, driving and positioning, hose and nozzles from the perspective of the pump operator, water supplies, hydraulic theory and fire ground calculations, operation of the pump, operation of the foam systems, readiness checks, maintenance, and testing. Students learn about all types of pumps and are given the knowledge required to understand and manufacturer specific considerations for the safe operation of pumping apparatus. Successful completion will result in ProBoard certification.
