This month’s Instructor Development session will focus on the Firefighter I Ladders module. This hands-on workshop is designed to align instructional delivery across the Division and ensure consistency in how ladder operations are taught statewide.
The session will review key components of the current Firefighter I curriculum and applicable NFPA standards, with emphasis on:
Ground ladder terminology and construction
Ladder inspection and maintenance
Carrying and positioning techniques
Proper ladder placement for various objectives
Climbing, working from ladders, and leg locks
Common instructional variations and how to teach to the standard
Identifying and correcting unsafe methods
The intent of this development is not to re-teach the full 16-hour ladders block, but to focus on critical teaching points, commonly observed inconsistencies, and best practices for instructional delivery. Our goal is to ensure we are teaching to the standard—not to individual departmental habits—while still providing practical tips that support student success.
Participants should expect a collaborative, discussion-based format with practical skill components.
