The National Fire Academy is located in Emmitsburg, Maryland and was created by the United States Federal Government as a fire training and education institution in 1973. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) operates the National Fire Academy (NFA). The campus in Emmitsburg also hosts the National Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial. The purpose of the academy is to provide useful training to small rural volunteer departments and full-time urban departments alike. Training for new firefighters all the way up to Chiefs is available across the United States as a result of the NFA.
