Course Description

In this educational session, participants will engage in a team building exercise focused on interprofessional communication strategies. They will rotate through two breakout skills stations: normal labor assessment and delivery of a fetus to include AMTSL and another on neonatal resuscitation which emphasizes the golden minute of newborn care and BLS resuscitation. Finally participants will take part in two medical simulations, one involving the management of a term field delivery and the other a preterm field delivery.

SimPack 1 Objectives:
Cogitative:
1. Describe content of a complete primary assessment for a pregnant patient
2. Identify the steps required for an uncomplicated vainal birth
3. Recognize the signs of second stage labor and imminent birth
4. Discuss the benefits of providing respectful maternity care
5. Recognize the signs of a vigorous baby.
6. Identify and state the steps in AMTSL
7. Consider transporting patients to a facility with OB care
Technical:
1. Conduct scene assessment
2. Demonstrate recognition of second stage labor, imminent delivery and required preparation for birth
3. Complete a complete pregnant patient assessment
4. Perform appropriate hand maneuvers during delivery and check for nuchal cord
5. Conduct initial routine care of the baby
6. Complete the steps of AMTSL
7. Perform postpartum maternal assessment
Behavioral:
1. Demonstrate kind and respectful person centered care and communication with the birthing person and any birth support team members
2. Perform respectful, effective, and efficient interprofessional communication
3. Demonstrate respectful communication with the team as relevant

Simpack 2 Objectives:
Cognitive:
1. Describe content of a complete primary assessment for a pregnant patient
2. Recognize need for condition assessments including partner behavior
3. Identify a preterm delivery
4. Identify the steps required for an uncomplicated vaginal birth
5. Recognize the signs of the second stage of labor and imminent birth. Recognize the need for frequent reevaluation.
6. Discuss the benefits of providing respectful maternity care, using supportive and empathetic communication, and respecting patients preferences.
7. Recognize the sings of a stunned and preterm baby.
8. Identify and state the steps in AMTSL
9. Recognize potential for hypothermia for preterm baby and need for warmth as well as potential resuscitation
Technical:
1. Conduct scene assessment
2. Complete a complete pregnant patient assessment
3. Demonstrate recognition of second stage labor, imminent delivery and required preparation for birth
4. Perform appropriate hand maneuvers during the delivery, and check for nuchal cord
5. Conduct initial routine care of the baby
6. Maintain constant warmth for preterm baby
7. Complete the steps of AMTSL
8. Perform postpartum maternal assessment
9. Prepare the baby for safe transport including appropriate temperature regulation
Behavioral:
1. Demonstrate kind and respectful person centered care and communication with the birthing person and any birth support team members
2. Perform respectful, effective, and efficient interprofessional communication
3. Demonstrate respectful communication with the team as relevant
