Course Description

It has been said that when public health works, you don’t know it’s there. What is this often forgotten discipline and how does it work with EMS? As we explore the role of EMS in community medicine and disease prevention, how do EMS providers fit into the mission of public health?
Objectives:
• The participant will be able to define public health
• The participant will understand the role of EMS in public safety, medicine, and public health
• The participant will understand the social determinants of health
• The participant will be aware of the agencies at federal, state, and community level that play a role in public health
• The participant will recognize the three types of public health prevention
• The participant will appreciate the difference between infectious and non-infectious disease and the response to each
• The participant will recognize how public health is engaged in emergency preparedness and response.
