Teaching Conceptual Learning Techniques

Dr. Katherine Lockwood, NREAMT, NH I/C, asks rhetorically “what are we supposed to teach? Students, she says in her recorded presentation, ask, “what am I supposed to learn?”

Dr. Lockwood touches on developing critical thinking and the ADEPT method (Analogy, Diagram, Example, Plain English description and Technical definition) of learning, where instructors  develop buy in, break concepts into steps, show examples and exceptions, incorporate practice and then provide assessment.  Analogy, “tell me what it’s like,” and example, “allow me to experience it.” Are key parts of the adept method of learning and are a recognizable to fire and EMS instruction.
