The City of Keene’s Fire Department is looking for a full-time Training Officer!

Under limited supervision, this position is primarily responsible for providing personnel with state mandated in-service training as well as delegating daily/weekly/monthly training topics to departmental members and partner agencies. The Training Officer assists in preparing departmental budget estimates and projected capital expenditures as required and conducts department wide training needs assessment, develops course content, administers, and monitors courses, and evaluates instructors and students’ individual performance.  This position creates and maintains an up-to-date curriculum for in-service training and coordinates external training requests by staff and assists with staff registration and travel arrangements.  Other duties include attending regional and state-wide training meetings, maintaining all required position certifications, and engaging in their own personal and professional growth through continuing education, advanced training, and upper-level education.   The Officer also attends Command Staff meetings, provides reports and compiles monthly training statistics.

Responds to all major incidents during normal business hours, and when available after hours. Integrates into the Incident Command System with primary role being that of the Incident Safety Officer.  Provides assistance in investigating near-misses and property damage or personal injury incidents. Works with Peer Fitness Trainers to ensure department compliance with fitness standards, annual fitness testing, and remediation. Works with Fire Administration and selected vendor to coordinate annual firefighter medical physicals, FIT Testing, and third-party fitness screenings.

Education and Experience

Must have a thorough knowledge of the technical field of fire science, firefighting, and technical rescue strategies and tactics; Associate degree in Fire Science or related field (bachelor’s degree preferred); supplemented by ten years of career fire service including experience as an officer in a comparable size or larger fire department; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

IFSAC or Pro Board Certifications

Fire Officer II (Fire Officer III preferred or ability to obtain)

Fire and Emergency Services Instructor II (Instructor III preferred or ability to obtain)

Hazardous Materials Technician (NFPA 1072)

Incident Safety Officer

Health and Safety Officer (or ability to obtain)

Technical Rescue – Minimum of two (2); Trench Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Structural Collapse, Vehicle, Swiftwater or Rope Rescue

AHA BLS Instructor (or ability to obtain within 12 months)

FEMA ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800

National Registry – EMT, AEMT or Paramedic Licensure (or eligible for reciprocity)

 

Pay and Benefits

Effective July 1, 2024, the pay range for this position is $33.97- $43.54 per hour ($74,190.48-$95,091.36 annualized).  Starting salary will be based on qualifications and prior experience.  The City also has a new inventive program!  New Hampshire and out-of-state career firefighters (FF2/AEMT or FF2/Paramedic) with one year of full-time service at the time of hire are now incentive eligible- up to $7,500 depending on credentials!  Lateral hires must satisfy the NHFSCT 700 rules as a condition of hire.
